If you know anything about me, you know my connection to morse code and cryptography. I won't tell you how much time I've spent encoding messages into content I have a hand in creating and searching for encoded messages in the content that others create.

As I've indicated before, I'm a big fan of Mark Evanier and his blog, News from ME. I started reading it again in November after a long hiatus. One of my favorite features of it is the header cartoons created by the spectacular artist Sergio Aragonés. These occasionally switch between what's usually there and one that may last a day or more depending on why it's there. For instance, a holiday one is usually posted for a day. I wasn't reading at the time, but there was a header for the writers' strike and that probably lasted until it ended (and was interrupted briefly by a Halloween-themed one). There was a Superman and a Batman one recently (at least Superman dates back a while). They're always very good and sometimes achingly poignant with the rich layers of humor you expect from a Sergio creation (I'm not sure if they're a collaboration or not).

Today between 4 and 4:30 PM I noticed that there wasn't a new blog post yet so I checked the main site for the header and indeed there was an update. It was one of my favorites, Groo at the keyboard with Rufferto sharing the chair behind and looking at Mark. The funny thing is that the graphic reintroduces a notorious gaffe from 2015, Rufferto's color bleeding into the chair. This snafu was quickly fixed then but I can't remember if it was addressed in a post or not. This time around I'm wondering which of these possibilities is true:
  1. It's a simple mixup¹ of the two versions of the graphic.
  2. I'm misinterpreting something.
  3. Mark is sending encoded messages to someone.
My money is on #2.
